MATERIALS
Some of the world's greatest musicians have worked for many years to come up with exciting and fun teaching materials, especially for very young children. Their efforts have withstood the test of time, and have been modified in accordance to feedback and observation of success or lack thereof. The KMI faculty have explored virtually everything available, and continually seek out new materials. We have selected some excellent materials and observed their success in our studios. Although HOW we teach is important for making learning fun, sometimes WHAT we are teaching is just as important.
AGE APPROPRIATE: The most important consideration is that the materials be appropriate for the student's age. Method books designed for 4 years olds have coloring and games. Method books designed for elementary students have pictures, and the songs are "fun". Method books for older beginniners and adults recognize that they already have established musical tastes, so musical selections represent popular tunes of the day. At KMI we recognize the importance of assigning materials to the student based on age - so that her/his interest can be maintainted.
SUPPLEMENTAL MUSIC: After the student (whatever age) has reached a certain level (basically able to read music, and requires about a year), we offer the student (family) supplemental music to play FOR FUN. There are many varieties from which to choose, from classical to popular, and religious to secular. Playing music for fun is the best way to keep motivation. The student needs songs to play which do not require lots of practice and do not represent learning something. It is VERY important to provide this outlet to the student, so be sure to discuss what interests your child and spend the extra money when the time comes.
CHRISTMAS MUSIC: Of all the supplemental materials, Christmas Music is the most popular for all student (even non-Christians ones), and really seems to "get the kids practicing" during the holiday season. When the KMI offer Christmas Music, be sure to say YES and get whatever is appropriate for your student's level of ability.
