KMI offers private lesson instruction in piano, keyboard and organ, provided by very highly qualified and experienced teachers. The KMI Piano & Organ Department is by far the largest and maintains the most rigorous curriculum. All students are expected to participate in the Annual Pittsburgh Piano Teachers Association (PPTA) Evaluations, regardless of age, program or level, although it is a requirement for all Young Artist piano students. The KMI curriculum is strongly in alignment with the PPTA syllabus to ensure all our piano students are prepared for the annual evaluations.
The Piano Core Curriculum must be completed before the student may proceed to either the Music Appreciation Program or Young Artist Program. Likewise, the Piano Core Curriculum must be completed prior to the study of Organ, as the basics covered are the same for both instruments, and the student must be physically mature enough to reach the pedal board. (See Core Curriculum for basic music requirements.)
Since the organ requires the same fundamentals as piano, the organ performance program begins at Level 5, after the student has successfully completed the Piano Core Curriculum. Students will learn the basics of playing the foot pedals, playing church hymns, organ registration and preparing a church service. This curriculum is still under development.
Ensemble: Orchestras and bands generally do not have pianists (and if they do it is limited to only one), therefore in order for a piano or organ student to gain important ensemble experience the piano or organ student is encouraged to participate in their school, church or community chorus. (See Choral Ensembles for more information.) In addition, piano students will be paired with other students at the same level to learn and perform piano duets.
Accompanying: KMI offers instuction on numerous instruments and KMI piano students will be asked to accompany them as they are qualified. Experience accompanying singers and instrumentalists is an important skill for piano students to develop.
